What else is open on New Year’s Day

  • Stocks (NYSE and Nasdaq): closed all day.
  • Bond market: Closed on New Year’s Day. SIFMA recommends a 2:00 PM ET early close on New Year’s Eve 2026.
  • Banks: Closed. New Year’s Day is a federal holiday, so banks and the Federal Reserve are closed.

The last trading day of the year

December 31 is the final session for the tax year. A sale has to execute by the close that day to count as a 2026 trade, which is why tax-loss selling and year-end rebalancing cluster in the last week of December.

When the holiday falls on a weekend

If January 1 is a Saturday, the NYSE does not move the holiday back to Friday, December 31, because that would close the last session of the year. If it is a Sunday, the market closes on Monday, January 2 instead.
